Where stillness
becomes visible

My work doesn't capture reality. It suggests its very essence.

Marije ter Weele

I photograph the space between things — the moment before recognition, the light that exists only once. Each edition is a meditation made visible.

Doors of Daitoku-ji

Waiting in front of ancient temple doors, I gave in to patience and was submerged by the present moment. I saw a world within.

Dutch Skies

I studied the beautiful Dutch clouds during school. A lifelong love — the horizontal light, the infinite breathing of the sky above the flat land.

Landscapes

The earth as meditation. Each landscape holds a specific quality of attention — a way of being present in the world.

About the Artist

Marije
ter Weele

"It was a magical moment to realize that my love for observing, my view on the world, my many interests could be expressed in a visual image."

Trained at Dutch and Kyoto art academies, Marije ter Weele lived and practiced daily zazen at Daitoku-ji temple in Kyoto. Her solo exhibitions have been shown in Kyoto, Tokyo, and across Europe.

She began as a professional dreamer — musician, writer, performer, presenter. Photography found her at 28, through a borrowed camera and an afternoon of pure observation. She has not stopped since.
